Satellite Availability

Satellite navigation is traditionally linked to the American GPS satellites (NAVSTAR). APS has pioneered the use of the Russian GLONASS satellites as an addition to GPS satellites in mining applications where they have significantly reduced downtime from lack of satellites. With 27 GPS and 13 GLONASS satellites, APS receivers can access 40 satellites.

APS - GALILEO Ready

Over the next five years four new satellite constellations are expected to start up. Most interest has been generated in the European Union GALILEO system, which will eventually consist of a 32 satellite constellation. APS can already ship base stations and rovers which are GALILEO ready. GALILEO is expected to have a useful number of satellites by 2010.

Zenith Satellite System

Less well known are the advanced plans for a Japanese system – known as the Quasi Zenith Satellite System or QZSS. QZSS will see three satellites placed in high earth orbit near geostationary orbit. These satellites are designed to reach down into the urban canyons of Tokyo. However the realities of orbital mechanics mean that the satellites will follow a figure of eight track taking them over Australia. All three satellites will always be visible from Australia, and at least one will always be at a high elevation in the sky. APS products will be able to utilize these satellites.

IRNSS Satellite System

The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) will have a similar configuration to QZSS, but will consist of seven satellites in near geo stationary orbits. This system will be visible from Western Australia and the Northern Territory. IT is not yet clear whether APS products will be able to access these satellites.

BEIDOU Satellite System

The Chinese BEIDOU or COMPASS system will consist of 35 satellites, some in regular orbits and some near geostationary.
